Festival of South African Dance

featuring Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies

About the Event

Featuring twenty dancers accompanied by live musicians, the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies share the Dominion Arts Center stage for an evening of exhilarating urban street dance that convey stories of hard work, human struggles, and a longing for a better life. Gumboots dancers, clad in Wellington boots, perform a dance style created by South African miners who used foot stomping as a means of communication when talking was prohibited during Apartheid. Established in 1992 by Sello Reuben Modiga, Pantsula dancers use hip-hop and breakdancing against a backdrop of house music to express social issues.
