Presented by Virginia Opera

About the Event

Hailed by critics as the first truly “American Opera,” and winner of the very first Tony Award for Best Original Score (1947), Street Scene mixed comedy, romance, and tragedy inside a single New York City tenement. The score features jazz, Broadway show-stoppers, and full-throated verismo lyricism. Dorothy Danner returns to direct her 16th production with Virginia Opera – starring Maureen McKay as Rose, Jill Gardner as her mother, and Zachary James, international opera singer and Broadway actor as the sometimes abusive husband and father. Featuring former Virginia Opera Herndon Foundation Emerging Artist David Blalock as the idealistic Sam Kaplan.

Running time: 2h 35m including intermission
In English with English supertitles
