Karar Dance Company

presents INFORMAL

About the Event

Karar Dance Company presents INFORMAL. No lights. No Costumes. Dance in its purest form.

Join the company as they return to their first live in-person, company performance in two and half years with the premiere of three new works in progress! Engage with the dancers and company through dialogue, Q&A, and immersive tasks. INFORMAL is a unique opportunity to both see and experience modern dance.

About the Company:

Karar Dance Company was founded in 2016 to provide a platform and give a voice to professional modern dance centered in Richmond, Virginia. The company has presented work throughout Virginia, in Maryland, Philadelphia, Upstate New York, and in New York City.  The company held their very first Winter Workshop MOVE in 2020 which returns in 2023 to be held annually.  Karar also conducts workshops, classes, and residencies to educate and set work on dancers both in Virginia and abroad.

Karar Dance Company continued to provide opportunities in 2020 and 2021 amidst the cancellation of scheduled programs and events due to COVID-19. Homegrown Choreographers launched HOMEGROWN, a virtual dance festival.  The company participated in the 2020 virtual Richmond Dance Festival and Take Up Space Festival.

ACTIVATE took place outdoors and socially-distanced at Maymont Park. In October 2020, Karar presented an evening of dance hosted by Brambly Park as part of artoberVA. Karar released the Interview Series which highlights the careers and experiences of working dance professionals. Karar has continued to present the Interview Series annually.

Homegrown Choreographers has expanded into a Young Dancer Mentorship program supported by the Carpenter Foundation. Karar hosts the first annual Summer Workshop this Summer July 14-16 at VCU Dance. Weekly modern dance classes begin in Fall of 2022 and Second Saturdays Modern Technique classes resume in September. The company hosts the first annual River City Dance Film Festival in October 2022 where they premiere dance film "Symphonic Variations" along with adjudicated films submitted by dance artists across the country.

The company is thrilled to return to the stage with "INFORMAL".

COVID-19 Policies

ASM Richmond is committed to the health and safety of our patrons, guests, artists, performers, crew, and staff and we will continue to follow the latest health guidance and protocols. In light of the changing conditions with COVID-19 and the Delta variant, we are working closely with all of our promoters to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, staff, and guests.

Currently, Dominion Energy Center is operating at 100% capacity and is strongly encouraging all patrons, whether vaccinated or not, to mask while at the venue. We do not have a vaccination or negative test requirement in place as a venue, although promoters of our upcoming shows are considering multiple options, including the possibility of masks, vaccines, and COVID-19 tests.

At this time, this show does not have any additional requirements in place for patrons outside of the standing venue policies. If there are any changes to the requirements prior to the show, patrons will be notified by email and the event page on the venue website will be updated.
